Lagos affirms commitment to industrial stability, tasks labour union Upskilling

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to industrial stability, calling on labour union leaders and key stakeholders to aggressively enhance their professional competencies to remain relevant in an increasingly automated and digital global workforce.

Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Mr. Afolabi Ayantayo, stated this during the opening ceremony of a high-level, two-day training programme held at the NUT Pavilion, Alausa.

The workshop, themed:“ Sustaining a Cordial and Harmonious Industrial Relations in the New World of Work, was strategically designed by the Ministry to bridge the gap between traditional labour practices and modern workplace demands.

In a statement signed by the Head, Public Affairs unit of the Ministry, Babatunde Omisore, Ayantayo observed that the "future of work" has already arrived, catalyzed by rapid technological shifts and the normalization of remote work systems.

He emphasized that for Lagos State to maintain its trajectory of growth, union leaders must transition from adversarial stances to a model of collaborative partnership.

Ayantayo said a stable industrial climate is not just a preference but a prerequisite for achieving the state’s broader developmental goals.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Olubusola Abidakun, who described the training as a timely intervention, noted that globalization and shifting economic realities are creating a complex landscape that requires both employers and employees to be more agile.

Mrs. Abidakun urged participants to translate the insights gained during the sessions into actionable strategies that promote Workforce Stability:

Responding on behalf of the organized labour, the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Lagos State Chapter, Comrade Abiodun Aladetan, lauded the state’s unique approach to industrial relations.

He remarked that Lagos continues to set a national benchmark by fostering an environment where government officials and union leaders sit as peers in a learning environment to ensure mutual progress.
