Lagos Set To Host Over 14,000 Athletes For National Intermediate Games

Lagos State Government says it is ready to host over 14,000 athletes, aged between 15 and 18, for the maiden National Intermediate Games, tagged “Eko 2026”, from October 1 to 15.

Deputy Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Sam Egube, said the two-week championship is aimed at promoting national unity, youth development and economic activities, while contributing to national development.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, called for the support and partnership of the media, assuring that the state government, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, would do everything possible to ensure the success of the championship.

Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said the competition would not only provide an opportunity to welcome young athletes but also help identify talents capable of representing Nigeria at national, continental and international competitions.

Fatodu said Eko 2026 would be held across ten facilities, featuring 31 events in 28 sporting disciplines, including cycling, table tennis, badminton and cricket.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the competition would provide young athletes with a platform to showcase their skills and develop their talents to compete at the global level.
